What is Wedding Insurance?
Wedding insurance provides financial protection for one of the most important days of your life. It helps cover unexpected losses caused by illness, accidents, or unforeseen events—such as a supplier failing to deliver their services due to financial difficulty — either before or on your wedding day. At InsureMyDay, our wedding insurance also extends to cover civil ceremonies and renewal of vows.
What does Wedding Insurance Cover?
While specific cover may vary between providers, a typical wedding insurance policy includes protection for the following:
- Cancellation or curtailment – Covers irrecoverable expenses you’ve already paid or are legally required to pay if your wedding is cancelled or cut short due to reasons such as serious illness, injury, or death of you or a close relative.
- Financial failure of wedding suppliers – Protection if a wedding service provider goes bankrupt or into liquidation, resulting in financial loss.
- Ceremonial clothing – Covers the cost of repair or replacement if your wedding attire—or that of your attendants—is lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Photography and video – Covers costs if your photographer or videographer fails to attend, or if photos/videos are lost, damaged, or not delivered due to technical issues or negligence.
- Wedding rings, flowers, gifts, and cake – Covers loss, theft, or damage to these essential elements of your day.
- Wedding transport – Covers costs if your wedding cars or other transport fail to show up or break down.
- Wedding gifts – Protection for loss, theft, or damage to gifts while stored by you, a close relative, or an attendant—including during transit or when on display at the reception.
- Personal liability – Covers legal liability for injury or property damage related to the ceremony or reception.
Wedding insurance can also include optional extras, provided the relevant premium is paid:
- Guest personal liability – Extends liability cover to include your wedding guests.
- Marquee cover – Covers loss, theft, or damage to a marquee during the hire period.
- Excess waiver – Covers the policy excess amount required in the event of a claim.
- Honeymoon cover – Offers protection for the cancellation of your honeymoon if your wedding is cancelled.
When Should I Buy Wedding Insurance?
It’s best to take out wedding insurance as soon as you book a venue or start paying deposits. Most providers allow you to purchase a policy up to two years before your wedding date.
Do I Need Wedding Insurance?
This depends on your personal circumstances. While it may feel like an added cost, wedding insurance can provide peace of mind and financial protection against unexpected disruptions. Weddings can be expensive, and costs often exceed initial budgets. Having cover in place means you’re less likely to suffer a financial loss if something forces you to cancel or rearrange your big day. Just remember—not every scenario is covered, so it's important to read the policy documents carefully.
